Arizona Immigration Solutions Conferences Examining what works, What doesn't and identifying the best Immigration solution for Arizona

Thanks to everyone who attend any of the five immigration solutions conferences. To say they were anything but a tremendous success would be an understatement. These public conferences bring together the best of the best of the country's immigration researchers, policy makers and members of the public to examine the impacts Arizona's immigration laws have had on our state and to begin the search for a better solution.

Speakers Confirmed for the Yuma AISC    

Glenn HamerDr. Magnus Lofstrom is a Research Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). His research interests include immigration, self-employment, education, welfare and earnings inequality. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, San Diego in 1999. Prior to joining PPIC, Magnus Lofstrom was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Alex NowrastehAlex Nowrasteh is a policy analyst at the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute. His op-eds have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Houston Chronicle, The Boston Globe, Investor's Business Daily, and numerous other newspapers and is a contributor on immigration on Fox News and CNN. His scholarly work has been published in The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. Mr. Nowrasteh will discuss the impacts state-based immigration laws have on free markets, trade, economic growth and business creation.

Paul BridgesPaul W. Bridges is the Republican Mayor of Uvalda, GA and father of three adult children. He was born in Vidalia, GA, holds a Master in Education, and is retired from Southern Nuclear Company. Mayor Bridges' remarks will focus on how his state's immigration laws have impacted the agriculture industry in his small rural community, its tax base and its ability to provide services.

Julie ErfleJulie Erfle is the wife of Phoenix police officer Nick Erfle who was killed in the line of duty by a gang-banger who was a previously deported illegal immigrant. In the aftermath of her husband's death, Julie has had to deal with the realities of the immigration debate at many levels. She has a unique perspective and will discuss how this tragic event has shaped her views on what to do about the problem of illegal immigration. Her blog is politicsuncuffed.com.

The inaugural conference sold out in just eight days and proved to be a solid blend of information, discussion and the sharing of opinions. It set the stage for the remaining conferences and show that rational dialogue on immigration was possible in Arizona. Over 200 elected officials, business leaders and members of the public attended this conference.

The second conference was held in Flagstaff and brought in attendees from the northern parts of Arizona for a day-long discussion of immigration policy as it affects the northern part of the state. This event had a larger focus on the impacts on city and county government as well as high-tech industry.

The fourth conference was held in Tucson and attracted some of the area's top business leaders to discuss Arizona's immigration policy as it affects the Central and Southern part of the state. This event had a focus on the impacts on border ranchers as well as high-tech industry.
